2026 Asia CoralWatch Ambassador Workshop

Taiwan to Host 2026 Asia CoralWatch Ambassador Workshop to Strengthen Reef Conservation.

From May 14-17, 2026, the coastal waters of the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County, Taiwan, will host the 2026 Asia CoralWatch Ambassador Workshop, an international gathering focused on training regional leaders in coral reef monitoring and conservation.

The four-day workshop is part of the CoralWatch training program, a scientific initiative linked to the University of Queensland that promotes the participation of scientists, educators and communities in monitoring the state of corals globally, organized by the Marine Affairs Research Center and National Kaoshiung University of Science and Technology.

The workshop will combine classroom sessions with field exercises at sea. During the intensive program, participants will receive specialized training in reef monitoring, standardized coral assessment methods, and scientific communication—key tools for generating reliable information on the health of marine ecosystems.

In addition to technical training, the workshop aims to strengthen a network of CoralWatch ambassadors in Asia, capable of leading local projects in monitoring, environmental education, and science outreach. Organizers emphasize that the goal is to empower regional leaders to drive coral reef conservation and promote ocean sustainability in their communities.

The Hengchun Peninsula was chosen as the venue due to the ecological importance of its marine ecosystems, renowned for their biodiversity and strategic importance for the study and protection of reefs in the Western Pacific region.

The 2026 Asia CoralWatch Ambassador Workshop is thus envisioned as a platform for scientific exchange and practical training that will contribute to strengthening regional capacities to address the challenges facing coral reefs, including climate change, bleaching, and human pressure on marine ecosystems.
