HOW TO/REGULATIONS

Competitive Freediving

Recognized by the International Olympic Committee, CMAS serves as the official international federation for freediving.

The organization is responsible for governing both the World and Continental Championships.

In the competitive environment, Freediving is qualified as an individual achievement.

All CMAS freediving disciplines are equally open to men and women.

Depending on the discipline the athlete may use a monofin, bi-fins or no fins at all.

Regulations

OUTDOOR Open Water disciplines

Constant Weight - CWT

The Constant Weight CWT is a discipline where the athlete must cover the vertical distance in apnea to the declared depth without any change in his weight during the whole attempt with fins.

He is not allowed to pull on the Performance Line.

The event takes place in open water (sea or freshwater).

Constant Weight with Bifins - CWT-BF

The Constant Weight Bifins CWT-BF is a discipline where the athlete must cover the vertical distance in apnea to the declared depth without any change in his weight during the whole attempt with the use of Bifins only.

The diver is not allowed to pull on the Performance Line.

The event takes place in open water (sea or freshwater).

Constant Weight with no fins - CNF

The Constant Weight with no fins CNF is a discipline where the athlete must cover the vertical distance in apnea to the declared depth without any change in his weight during the whole attempt without fins.

He is not allowed to pull on the Performance Line.

The event takes place in open water (sea or freshwater).

Free Immersion-FIM

Free Immersion FIM is a discipline where the athlete must cover the vertical distance in apnea to a declared depth without fins.

The event takes place in open water (sea or freshwater) and the athlete is allowed to pull on the Performance Line.

Athlete descends as deep as possible without fins, diver can use arms to pull himself along the rope during descent and ascent.

Variable Weight-VWT

Variable Weight VWT is a discipline where the athlete must cover the vertical distance in apnea to the declared depth with a guided ballast device and return with his own power, leaving the ballast at depth.

The event takes place in open water (sea or freshwater) with use of monofin (VWT-MF), bi-fins (VWT-BF) and without fins (VWT-NF).

This discipline allows the diver to work on relaxation on the descent, equalization techniques and progression in depth.

Skandalopetra

Skandalopetra is a recreational apnea discipline with historical roots.

The name comes from the Greek words “scandali” (trigger) and “petra” (stone). It is precisely this stone that forms the basis of this discipline.

The athlete dives with the aid of a stone (usually a marble slab) attached to a rope.

INDOOR Pool Disciplines

Static

Static apnea, STA, is an event where the athlete aims to perform a maximum duration in “Apnea”, holding his breath on the water’s surface.

The practice of static apnea contributes to the improvement of apnea in all disciplines.

It consists of staying as long as possible with the airways submerged.

Usually practiced on the surface, it allows you to work on relaxation, sensations, concentration.

Dynamic with Fins DYN

Dynamic Apnea DYN, is an event where the athlete aims to cover the maximum horizontal distance while keeping the body below the surface of the water in apnea.

Dynamic apnea is practiced with monofin or bi-fins, it consists of covering the greatest possible distance in a horizontal path under water.

Dynamic with Bi Fins DYNBF

Dynamic Apnea DYNBF, is an event where the athlete aims to cover the maximum horizontal distance while keeping the body below the surface of the water in apnea.

Dynamic apnea is practiced with bi-fins only, it consists of covering the greatest possible distance in a horizontal path under water.

Dynamic without Fins DNF

Dynamic apnea without fins DNF, consists of covering the greatest possible distance in a horizontal path under water, without fins so the diver has to swim underwater using movements of his limbs to move on.

Speed Apnea

The Speed apnea is an event where the athlete aims to cover a fixed distance in the shortest possible time. The test is carried out in a swimming pool and is carried out on pool-length courses alternating underwater swimming in apnea with passive recovery at the surface only at the ends of the pool.

The event is performed with bi-fins and mono-fins with a single classification, which means that the style of swimming with bi-fins is free and can be alternated or simultaneous.

Typical speed apnea distances are:
Speed 2x50m Speed 4x50m and Speed 8x50m
